so don't ask if you don't want to know
All the single ladies my ass
So just for shits and giggles I decided to watch the five nominated Best Female Videos to see if Kanye West had a point. I mean, I had to go look for them HERE because I don’t see a lot of videos in my life. Didn’t there used to be a whole cable channel devoted to music videos?
- Taylor Swift’s “You Belong To Me.” Won? It’s a cute little video where nerd girl wants boy, boy has cheerleader, cheerleader shits on boy, boy sees nerd girl, love. Wasn’t that a movie a few years ago?
- Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” makes no fucking sense at all. She’s singing a song to the single ladies to get a ring on it before… what? Can’t understand half the words and I ain’t looking them up. The point is, she’s singing to the ladies yet dancing half naked to entice all the single men. Or boys rather. Mixed message anyone? Female empowerment my sweet patootie.
- Katy Perry’s “Hot and Cold” is an amusing video. At least the story goes with the song and it looked like fun, but it seemed kind of ’80s to me.
- Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You” may have had a story to it, but it was more close-ups of her face. Why bother trying to make a story video if you’re not going to show the story?
- Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” was at least visually stimulating. Lots of sparkles and costumes and interesting camera shots.
- Pink’s “So What” actually had a real story to it, and seemed completely in character to what little I know of Pink’s actual life. I could see her having this kind of a meltdown and that made it fun.
Kanye should stop talking with/as his dick. Sure Beyonce is beautiful and talented, but that video was a waste. She looks like a jerking Barbie Doll and shakes her ass. That’s it. Nothing to do with the actual song as demonstrated here with someone’s edited version (thanks Iain).
I would have picked Pink’s as the best of that bunch, hands down. She’s kicking ass and chainsawing down trees. Now that’s female empowerment!

I envy you.
You can write what you want!
This was fun to read, and the title made me smile.

Yes but Kanye couldn’t give props to anyone who wasn’t a sista. It would ruin his cred. Plus Kayne doesn’t care about White people…

I think the reason that Kanye was all OMfG BEYONCE is because the video was filmed in one take. That’s pretty bad ass, but it’s still not video of the year, I think. The only other video I’ve seen was Lady Gaga’s, and I fucking love her so damn much, but that’s not video of the year material, either.

I’m not sure that any of the videos are really supposed to be about female empowerment. It is really just supposed to be entertainment.
I like Taylor Swift for my 12-year-olds because her whole CD is clean. She has an innocence about her that doesn’t seem fake. If it is, then they should add an Oscar to that VMA she won.
The song “Single Ladies” is actually about the woman going out to the club and having herself a good time and telling her boyfriend that he has no right to be jealous because he had his chance to “put a ring on it” (propose). Not that I am a huge Beyonce fan, but I’ve managed to hear that song a number of times because I still watch the VH1 Top 20 countdown and listen to local radio.
Katy Perry and Lady Gaga both annoy me. I can’t exactly explain why, but I usually turn the station when I see or here either of them.
The Pink CD that this song came from, Funhouse, is great! I was just listening to it again last night. Almost all the songs are about her separation from her husband. I highly recommend it.

Dani, the reason I mentioned female empowerment is because of the description of the video on the VMA website. They said it, not me.
Eliza, I guess that was all done in one take! I hadn’t noticed, but that does give it a bit more credit in my estimation. Props to the two girls who kept right up with her.
Justin darling, you can write whatever you want on my blog. Consider this your free space.
Doz, there you go bein’ all racist and shit.

No not racist at all, I’m sorry if I came off that way. I’m just going by the Mr. West response on the Hurricane Katrina charity drive show, when on national TV he declared “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” There were people of all races in that tragedy not just African-Americans.
Kayne just annoys me with all his childish outbursts about how he is the greatest entertainer of all time and deserves more than he gets. He is a classless person. Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin would have never done such a thing.

I agree with you. I think the P!nk video was the best one.

My bad. I didn’t watch the awards show itself and I haven’t been to the MTV website in ages, so I didn’t know they were going with the “girl power” angle.
More on the Beyonce video: She said in an interview a while back that she was inspired by a Gwen Verdon (look for “Mexican Breakfast” on YouTube). So you are correct in saying that the video doesn’t have much to do with the song, other than Beyonce thinking “Single Ladies” was the best song on her CD to use with that dance style.
